Should I call the number on TV?

We make decisions daily and something that makes it a little easier to feel confident in our decision making is the word of those we trust. Think of someone you trust. If they told you to sign up for something, would you do it? Maybe you would follow the word of someone you trust rather than if it was a stranger telling you to sign up for the same thing, but what about celebrities?

Can I trust celebrities?

It’s easy to place our trust in celebrities we idolize and the products they endorse. However, at the end of the day, these celebrities were paid to do a promotion for a product that they very well may not even use themselves. When it comes to Medicare plans, celebrities will not have or need the same insurance or Medicare coverage as the average Joe. When you do call these numbers on TV you’ll be met with a “faceless” agent that you don’t know and often cannot meet with in person. These TV advertisements and virtual agents will generally only tell you the positives about what a plan can offer but with every benefit there is somewhere else that costs must be cut! If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is! If you see a celebrity advertising anything related to Medicare, always take it with a grain of salt.

What should you do instead?

Instead of calling the numbers we see on TV, get in contact with a local agent in your area and talk with one you can review with face-to-face. Learn what the pros and cons are of a plan and choose the one with all the bells and whistles for you - not anyone else and definitely not a celebrity! With in-person agents you always know where to find them and there is less room for miscommunication compared to over-the-phone interactions. Going with a local agent is the best option to ensure you know exactly what you are signing up for and if it works for you.
